Amazon Worker's Pay Fight Reaches Supreme Court

An Amazon employee's battle to be paid for time spent waiting in a security line after his shift had finished has ended up at the US Supreme Court.

Jesse Busk, 37, said he and hundreds of other workers at a Nevada warehouse had to go through airport-style screening process at the end of a shift - including metal detectors - to make sure no goods had been stolen.

But he said the process often took as long as 25 minutes, time for which he and others were not paid.

He told Bloomberg: "They did it on my time. If people are stuck in your building and they're not allowed to leave, why don't you go ahead and pay them?"

The Supreme Court will hear the arguments from both sides on Wednesday. Mr Busk is seeking compensation for his time spent in the lines, and success could have ramifications for all current and former Amazon warehouse employees.

Other warehouse workers who also have to go through similar processes could claim back cash if his claim is successful.

If the court sides with Mr Busk, his case can then move forward in a federal court trial. Amazon's staffing agency partners could end up being ordered to pay up to 400,000 workers back wages, costing $100m or more.

The lawsuit was first filed in December 2010, against a temporary staffing agency that provided workers to Amazon.

Since then, more than 10 similar suits have been filed involving Amazon, as well as many more against other retailers.

Amazon has settled some of the other cases, offering small payments to some of the workers involved.
